From Tourist to Traveller
In 1980 I joined the Air Force, and left on my first extended journey; I took my first flight across time zones to arrive in a new place where I experienced and adapted to a new culture. By Christmas, I had lived in four States travelling through Australia by road, rail and air. I began to realise how much there is to see in this world, and knew I wanted to experience as much as possible.
I lived in Malaysia for two years; developed a passion for the spicy local makan, and enjoyed the last vestiges of colonial Singapore before it disappeared under a veil of modernity. When China drew aside the Bamboo Curtain in the 80s, I jumped at the opportunity to scratch the surface of its ancient culture. Standing on the Great Wall, I had the first of my WOW travel moments as I took in the scale of their achievement. When I got home to Malaysia, the ‘I cruised the Yangtze’ t-shirt was insufficient proof of the trip for my Chinese-Malaysian friends who could not hope to visit China at the time.
Moving the family to the United States in 2000 expanded our travel opportunities, and we developed a new philosophy that now shapes our lives. Travel is an experience and to experience somewhere you must adopt the local philosophy, and see yourself through their eyes. If you make your destination just like home then you may as well have just stayed there and watched television.
